Why are some horses gaited?
Why are some breeds of horses gaited, and others not?
I know that walk, trot, canter, and gallop are part of a horses instincts on how to organize leg movement in order to move at different speeds and maintain composure. But how did the gaited breeds seemingly "decide" to have another gait? Its almost as if one horse had a free thought, and just decided to perform another gait.
I don't know a whole lot about gaited breeds, maybe they are taught their gait by trainers. But if not, why are some horses just naturally gaited?
Just like a hound dog sniffs the ground and a bird dog sniffs the air, it is genetics. Just like some Quarter Horses have it in them to herd cows. It is their make up. All about genetics.
