What is the best horse feed to feed a neglected horse?

My neighbors have 4 skinny horses. I talked with the guy and he is paying me $100 a week to take care of them plus he buys the feed.... Here's the problem it's livestock feed not horse feed..... I've also started working with the Chestnut Arabian horse and the Buckskin Quarter horse... They need weight tho... so what is the best feed to help them gain weight????? NO stupid answers please.....

I have had the best success in rehabilitating thin horses with good quality alfalfa, start at 20 lbs each and work up to 25 to 30 lbs. Pasture or grass hay should be available also. Livestock feed is OK, unless it contains rumensin, which is poisonous to horses. Most livestock feed contains urea for the rumen, so is useless to horses, and is just an extra cost that will do nothing. Just plain wet COB (corn, oats, barley with molasses) is best for horses and just about any animal. Makes horses a little energetic though. Overall, just a lot of alfalfa hay usually does the trick. Be aware that alfalfa will loosen the bowels until they get used to it. No harm though. Be sure teeth are good and horses are dewormed and you should have success.
